  1. The beginning point

Glad to see you. How are you?

Today we are going on an imaginary journey to Great Britain. You've already learned some facts about it and prepared the projects on three countries: England, Scotland and Wales.

Well, you'll visit them today, listen to each other and I'm sure you'll learn more about these lands. Each of you has 2 tables on your desk which you should fill in by the end of the lesson. The first one is to be filled in while listening to other groups and the other is for evaluating each other's works.

1.First of all tell me where Great Britain is situated. (a map)

What countries does it consist of? Can you show them on the map?

2.Обращаясь к первой группе. Аs far as I know you are going to England, aren't you?

How are you going to travel? Why?

P1 I think we'll fly by plane as it is very comfortable and fast. etc

3.Well, let's pack the suitcases, you'll take only necessary things because it's very difficult to travel with a lot of luggage. Say what things you will take and why.

(a picture of a suitcase with different things)

P2 As for me I'll take a book to read in a plane.

P3 I'll take money to buy souveniers for my relatives. etc.

You' ve packed your suitcases, so you are ready for the trip.

4.Welcome on board the plane, you'll get your tickets after you tell us your favourite proverbs. Ученики проходят в самолёт после того, как произносят пословицы.

Imagine you're sitting in a modern comfortable plane. Your trip is beginning.

(Ребята расставляют стулья как в самолёте заранее, ролевая игра)

I (1 group )

Stewardess Hello Ladies and gentlemеn!You are welcome on board our plane. Fasten your belts. In a few minutes our plane will take off. Our flight from Sheremetyevo to Heathrow lasts 3 hours. I hope you'll enjoy the flight.

  • P1 Heathrow? What is that? We are going to London, aren't we?

  • P2 Oh, don't worry… . It's the name of the international airport in London.

  • P1 Exactly, like Sheremetyevo in Moscow.

  • P2 It seems we are starting.

  • P1 When will we land in London, I mean in Heathrow?

  • P2 In three hours. At half past one.

  • P1 Look, we are flying high in the sky. Goodbye Russia. Hello, Britain! (all together)

Stewardess It's interesting to see how the scenery is changing right in front of our eyes.

(во время полилога идёт слайдовая презентация, подготовленная учениками)

  • P1 England consists of 5 regions. When people travel to Britain by sea or air they usually arrive in the Southeast, for this is where the main passenger ports and airports are. Heathrow airport, one of the world's busiest airports is about 33 km west of central London. It's a highly populated region. London, the capital of the UK, and such historical cities as Windsor, Dover and Brighton are situated here.

  • P2 The Southwest is the region where the main activity is farming. It used to be known for its pirates. The romantic past makes it a popular place for artists, writers and holidaymakers. The famous Stonehenge and the most westerly point of Great Britain "Land's End" are situated in the Southwest.

  • P3 East Anglia is very flat and it's another farming region. It has beautiful cities such as Cambridge, with fine historic buildings. Oliver Cromwell, an English general and politician, who later became Lord Protector of England was born here. East Anglia is isolated from the rest of Britain because of its position away from the main national roads and because of its shape: it is more than half surrounded by the sea.

  • P4 The Midlands, known as the heart of England, is the largest industrial part of the country. The most important industrial cities are Manchester, Sheffield, Liverpool, which is one of Britain's big ports, and Birmingham. Stratford -upon-Avon is the birthplace of great William Shakespeare and Oxford is famous for its university.

  • P5 The North of England has some of the wildest and loneliest parts of the country, but also some of the busiest industrial cities. Here you can find deep valleys, rivers and waterfalls, hills and mountains. This region is rich in coal. Its main attractions are the Lake District and the ruins of Hadrian's wall. Many tourists come over especially to look at it.

What places of interest would you like to see in England?

  • P4 I have always wanted to see Buckingham Palace, which is the Queen's residence and the Tower. It's a famous ancient historic building. As far as I know it was founded by William the Conqueror in 1078. The Tower was a fortress, a palace, a prison and the royal zoo. The crown jewels are kept there now. And what about you, Kate?

  • P3 And I want to visit the Royal Albert Hall as I'm fond of music. It is a very large concert hall where the best musicians of the world perform classical music.

Stewardess Our plane has successfully landed in London. We wish you a nice journey! Goodbye.

  • Goodbye! (in chorus)

Ученики садятся на свои места.

II (2 group)

We are going on a journey to Scotland

  1. Poem "My heart's in the Highlands" (by Robert Burns) (P1, P2, P3, P4 рассказывают по четверостишью)

There are some talented pupils in the group who have done a literary translation of the poem) (Pupils read their translations.)

  1. Scotland Dialogue Ex. 29 p.183 (P1 P2) наизусть

  2. We would like you to sing a Scottish song "My Bonnie" (1 куплет) (поют все вместе)

  3. P3 He who has not seen Scotland does not really know Great Britain. It's situated to the north of England. Its symbol is a thistle, its patron saint is St. Andrew. The country is divided into Highlands and Lowlands, Glasgow is its largest and busiest town, Edinburgh is its capital. There are only 45 miles between them. Glasgow is the heart of industry. It is a centre of business and trade. It is very busy, prosperous, dirty in some parts and smart in others. Eginburgh is rather cold but attractive, very proud but friendly and had a great past. Eginburgh is known as the Athens of the North.

P4 The most interesting parts of the city are the Old Town and the New Town.

The Old Town is a striking contrast to the New Town with its white and beautiful streets lined with trees. Princes street is the most beautiful street of the New Town. This street is connected with the name of the famous writer, Sir Walter Scott. One of the most modest and yet one of the best known monuments in Edinburgh is a monument to a dog called Bobby. The dog belonged to Joan Gray. When he died Bobby lived near his grave for 26 years. His statue in the Old Town has become a symbol of devotion. There are a lot of other interesting places in Scotland. I can't but say that this country is worth visiting. (Рассказ сопровождается слайдовой презентацией.)

Teacher: Now you'll watch a short video about the Scottish capital and do the test.

III (3 group)

Meet the correspondent and the citizens of Wales (a microphone)

  • I'm a correspondent of a Russian newspaper. Our readers want to know if there is something interesting about Wales.

  • Certainly! It's a wonderful land with its own geography, culture, traditions and language.

  • What do you mean? Don't the Welsh speak English?

  • They do. But the Welsh language is spoken widely and it is still the first language for many people. By the way English is taught side by side with Welsh in schools.

  • Is Welsh different from English?

  • Very much so. Welsh is one of the Celtic languages. Even if your English is fluent you won't be able to understand Welsh.

  • Interesting. And what about the cities?

  • Cardiff is the capital and the main port. It is an industrial city, which also has a castle, a cathedral, a university. There are other big towns in Wales too, Swansea and Newport among them.

  • Ok. But what about the scenery?

  • Wales is a land of green fields, forests and farms. It is also a land of mountains and valleys, streams and waterfalls. In North Wales you can follow mountain paths for miles and miles.

  • Tell me a few words about Mount Snowdon.

  • Got interested? OK. In summer, when the sun is shining, Snowdon looks very peaceful and beautiful. But in winter the mountains can become very dangerous.

  • But do climbers go there?

  • They do, but every year climbers get lost in bad weather or fall and injure themselves. When this happens, the Mountain Resque Service has to go out to look for the climbers.
