Цель урока:

I. Read the text below on animals living in Canada quickly to get a general sense of what it's about.

II. Find the following words in the text and write a short definition for them.

colouration - the natural colours and patterns of an animal

matriarchal - dominated by females

range - vary between two sizes

cubs - young bears

lifespan - the number of years an animal is expected to live

lay - produce eggs

III. Read the text again and answer the questions.

1. What do killer whales look like?

- They are absolutely beautiful. They have a very distinctive colouration.

2. Where do they live?

- They live along British Columbia's coastline.

3. What is the social structure of their community?

- They always travel in groups of 5-30 called pods. The whales live and travel with their mothers… forming strongly matriarchal communities.

4. How do they hunt?

- Killer whales are very successful hunters due to their cooperative hunting.

5. How big are Canadian bears?

- Adult male black bears range from about 130 to 190 centimetres in length and 60 to 300 kilograms in weight.

6. What do they feed on?

- The bears are generally vegetarian. Their diet consists of roots, berries, nuts, fish, insects and sometimes other animals.

7. What are their social relationships?

- Cubs remain with their mothers for a year and a half. Except for females with cubs, black bears spend most of their time alone.

8. When do Canada geese spend the winter?

- They fly south for the winter in search of warmer climates.

9. What are their social relationships?

- They have very strong family relations. Families stay together until the time comes to return to the breeding areas.

And now we are going to visit one of the National Parks of Canada. -Tuktut Nogait National Park. Listen and say what animals live there.

- many herds of caribou. However, it is also the home to other wildlife species, such as Musk Ox, Grizzly Bears, Arctic char, and the Grey Wolf. Tuktut Nogait is also a major breeding and nesting ground for a wide variety of migratory birds. Raptors such as Peregrine Falcons, Rough-legged Hawks, Gyr Falcons and Golden Eagles nest along the steep walls of river canyons.
