Открытое занятие кружка по английскому языку по теме

"Cultural Identity and Values"

Цель: рассмотреть отношения между личностью и социумом или государством, в котором они живут.

Задачи: обучать учащихся аргументированному монологическому и диалогическому высказыванию; развивать навыки аудирования и чтения, умение логически мыслить, работать в группах; воспитывать у учащихся чувство патриотизма и национального самосознания, формировать толерантность.

Ход занятия.

1. Речевая зарядка.

Think about our country and name three things you associate with living here. Think about places and values and be ready to discuss the things you've chosen.

For example: a birch tree, the Kremlin, a bear. I've chosen a birch tree because I associate it with Russian nature, poems, and folk songs. The Kremlin for me is the symbol of Russian culture and politics. As for the bear is the symbol of many Russian coats of arms, and besides it is glorified in many Russian bylines as a symbol of strength of spirit.

2. Работа с терминологией.

Let's try to define these words: culture, CULTURAL IDENTITY, VALUES, NATIONALITY, and ETHNICITY. How do you understand them?

Culture means the beliefs, way of life, art and customs that are shared and accepted by people in a particular society.

CULTURAL IDENTITY means belonging to a particular society and its way of life.

NATIONALITY means mostly belonging to a certain country.

ETHNICITY is the fact or a state of belonging to a particular ethnic group that has common national or cultural traditions.

Let's illustrate the latter two words with some examples…

All of us live in Russia, so we all can be considered as Russians, and as for ethnicity it will be different. What ethnicity do you belong to? And what about your parents and grand parents? Why do you get on well with each other? -Because you love each other. So if we are tolerant to other nations, there won't any way to misunderstanding and xenophobia.

3. Активизация лексики и Аудирование.

Look at the words of Ex.1 and think if they can be seen as values. What do you mean by values? - The things you estimate and appreciate most of all Write the list of words you associate with each thing. Use the pictures to help you. An example: money- cash, coins, notes. Now let's discuss what you associate with the same words.

Childhood: mother, father, grandparents, toys, happiness.

Family: happiness, joy, love, consolation

Home: flat, family, comfort.

Neighborhood: stadium, friends, school, play ground, fun.

Politics: president, elections, deputies.

Religion: church, Easter, Christmas, icons.

School: teachers, pupils, labs, blackboard, respect, understanding.


Аудирование Ex.3 . Listen to Robert, who is English, talking about his cultural identity and values.Первое прослушивание- What words from Ex.1. does he mention?- childhood, family, religion, school. Now listen again (второе прослушивание) сheck the words with the things in 1. Why does he associate them like that? Do you remember the way you characterize them? Why do you think they are so different?

4.Диалогические высказывания учащихся.

Work in pairs. Which of these statements do you agree or disagree with? And give grounds to illustrate your opinion. Ex.4.Some discussions of each point in the group.

5. Oбучение поисковому чтению Ex. 5 And now match these comments with the statements in 4.

Remember that not all the statements are needed. Do you remember what countries these people come from? Does it explain their ideas to some extend?

6. Speaking. Monologues

Look at the list of values and choose the ones which are important to you. Explain your choice. Ex.6.For example: my choice is family, career, education. A family -because it is the first and foremost, it is our foundations. A career - because I want my family to be proud of me, and besides I'd like to achieve as much as possible in my job. Education - is the basis for everything I want to achieve.

7. Work in pairs. Look at these symbols from banknotes, coins, and stamps from different countries. What cultural values do they represent? Ex 7.

8. Project. Design your own banknote, coin, or stamp. Think of suitable cultural values to represent your country today.

or

Just imagine you are going to fly to one of distant planets. What will you take with you to represent your country? Why? (Three things and grounds)

Conclusion. Should we speak about cultural identity?

  • Yes, it helps us to feel our culture better.

  • Accept and understand other cultures, and make our relations on the basis of tolerance and mutual understanding.
